Job Summary

We are seeking a talented deckhand to join our team on a standby basis, ready to assist with vessel operations, navigation, and ensuring safety and efficiency as needed. This role provides coverage during staffing gaps or when team members are on vacation or leave.

As this is a temporary role, overnight housing will be provided for non-resident candidates where required, as shifts begin and end on Herron Island to ensure emergency readiness.

The Ferry Deckhand/Purser plays a critical role in the safe and efficient operation of Herron Island’s ferry services. This position includes assisting with docking and departure procedures, ensuring passenger safety, collecting fares, and maintaining vessel and dock facilities. Employees contribute to a seamless and secure experience for all passengers and vehicles.

                                                                             

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Ability to start and end shifts on Herron Island.

Preferred:

  • Experience in marine operations or customer service.
  • Familiarity with vehicle and passenger ferry operations.

Salary and Benefits

Base Rate: $26.45/hour, plus:

  • Call Back Pay: Minimum of 4 hours at overtime rate for off-duty callouts.
  • Overtime: Time-and-a-half for hours over 11/day or 40/week.
  • Pager Pay/Emergency Notification: This role may require after-hours availability on shift days for emergency readiness. Where required, a pager is carried and employees are compensated $39.39/shift for doing so.

Working Conditions

  • Schedule: Split shifts; includes nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency on-call duties.
  • Environment: Outdoor work in varied weather conditions, onboard vessel and at dock facilities.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb vertical ladders, and lift and handle vehicle barricades.
    • Random drug testing required.

The Ferry Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a 65-foot double-ended ferry, transporting up to 11 vehicles and passengers per 10–15-minute passage between the island and Key Peninsula. This role ensures compliance with maritime regulations, supervises the crew, and upholds the highest safety and professionalism standards.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in marine operations as a licensed Captain.
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master Inland endorsement or greater.
  • FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit.

Salary and Benefits
